1 Corinthians 15:55

¹⁴I will ransom them from the power of Sheol.^[+] I will redeem them from death! Death, where are your plagues? Sheol, where is your destruction? “Compassion will be hidden from my eyes.

⁴⁸What man is he who shall live and not see death, who shall deliver his soul from the power of Sheol?Selah.

²⁷because you will not leave my soul in Hades,^[+] neither will you allow your Holy One to see decay.

¹⁴Nevertheless death reigned from Adam until Moses, even over those whose sins weren’t like Adam’s disobedience, who is a foreshadowing of him who was to come.

⁸For the redemption of their life is costly, no payment is ever enough, ⁹that he should live on forever, that he should not see corruption. ¹⁰For he sees that wise men die; likewise the fool and the senseless perish, and leave their wealth to others. ¹¹Their inward thought is that their houses will endure forever, and their dwelling places to all generations. They name their lands after themselves. ¹²But man, despite his riches, doesn’t endure. He is like the animals that perish. ¹³This is the destiny of those who are foolish, and of those who approve their sayings. Selah. ¹⁴They are appointed as a flock for Sheol.Death ^[+] shall be their shepherd. The upright shall have dominion over them in the morning. Their beauty shall decay in Sheol,far from ^[+] their mansion. ¹⁵But God will redeem my soul from the power of Sheol,^[+] for he will receive me. Selah.

¹⁵Then I said in my heart, “As it happens to the fool, so will it happen even to me; and why was I then more wise?” Then I said in my heart that this also is vanity. ¹⁶For of the wise man, even as of the fool, there is no memory forever, since in the days to come all will have been long forgotten. Indeed, the wise man must die just like the fool!

⁵He said, “Who are you, Lord?” The Lord said, “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting.

⁵For the living know that they will die, but the dead don’t know anything, neither do they have any more a reward; for their memory is forgotten. ⁶Also their love, their hatred, and their envy has perished long ago; neither do they any longer have a portion forever in anything that is done under the sun.

⁸There is no man who has power over the spirit to contain the spirit; neither does he have power over the day of death. There is no discharge in war; neither shall wickedness deliver those who practice it.

¹³The sea gave up the dead who were in it. Death and Hades^[+] gave up the dead who were in them. They were judged, each one according to his works. ¹⁴Death and Hades^[+] were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire.
