John 12:1

³While he was at Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper, as he sat at the table, a woman came having an alabaster jar of ointment of pure nard—very costly. She broke the jar and poured it over his head. ⁴But there were some who were indignant among themselves, saying, “Why has this ointment been wasted? ⁵For this might have been sold for more than three hundred denarii^[+] and given to the poor.” So they grumbled against her.

⁶But Jesus said, “Leave her alone. Why do you trouble her? She has done a good work for me. ⁷For you always have the poor with you, and whenever you want to, you can do them good; but you will not always have me. ⁸She has done what she could. She has anointed my body beforehand for the burying.

¹Now a certain man was sick, Lazarus from Bethany, of the village of Mary and her sister, Martha.

⁵⁰He led them out as far as Bethany, and he lifted up his hands and blessed them.

⁵⁵Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand. Many went up from the country to Jerusalem before the Passover, to purify themselves.

¹⁷He left them and went out of the city to Bethany, and camped there.

²⁰Now there were certain Greeks among those who went up to worship at the feast.

⁶Now when Jesus was in Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper, ⁷a woman came to him having an alabaster jar of very expensive ointment, and she poured it on his head as he sat at the table. ⁸But when his disciples saw this, they were indignant, saying, “Why this waste? ⁹For this ointment might have been sold for much and given to the poor.”

¹⁰However, knowing this, Jesus said to them, “Why do you trouble the woman? She has done a good work for me. ¹¹For you always have the poor with you, but you don’t always have me.

⁴⁴He who was dead came out, bound hand and foot with wrappings, and his face was wrapped around with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Free him, and let him go.”

¹¹Jesus entered into the temple in Jerusalem. When he had looked around at everything, it being now evening, he went out to Bethany with the twelve.
