Jeremiah 16:8

¹⁷I didn’t sit in the assembly of those who make merry and rejoice. I sat alone because of your hand, for you have filled me with indignation.

²It is better to go to the house of mourning than to go to the house of feasting; for that is the end of all men, and the living should take this to heart. ³Sorrow is better than laughter; for by the sadness of the face the heart is made good. ⁴The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning; but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth.

¹²In that day, the Lord, GOD ^[+] of Armies, called to weeping, to mourning, to baldness, and to dressing in sackcloth; ¹³and behold, there is joy and gladness, killing cattle and killing sheep, eating meat and drinking wine: “Let’s eat and drink, for tomorrow we will die.” ¹⁴The LORD ^[+] of Armies revealed himself in my ears, “Surely this iniquity will not be forgiven you until you die,” says the Lord, GOD of Armies.

⁴who lie on beds of ivory, and stretch themselves on their couches, and eat the lambs out of the flock, and the calves out of the middle of the stall, ⁵who strum on the strings of a harp, who invent for themselves instruments of music, like David; ⁶who drink wine in bowls, and anoint themselves with the best oils, but they are not grieved for the affliction of Joseph.

⁴I have not sat with deceitful men, neither will I go in with hypocrites.

¹¹Have no fellowship with the unfruitful deeds of darkness, but rather even reprove them.

³⁸For as in those days which were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ship,

¹¹But as it is, I wrote to you not to associate with anyone who is called a brother who is a sexual sinner, or covetous, or an idolater, or a slanderer, or a drunkard, or an extortionist. Don’t even eat with such a person.

²⁷They ate, they drank, they married, and they were given in marriage until the day that Noah entered into the ship, and the flood came and destroyed them all. ²⁸Likewise, even as it was in the days of Lot: they ate, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they built; ²⁹but in the day that Lot went out from Sodom, it rained fire and sulfur from the sky and destroyed them all.
