Genesis 34:23

¹²Let’s swallow them up alive like Sheol,^[+] and whole, like those who go down into the pit. ¹³We’ll find all valuable wealth. We’ll fill our houses with plunder.

²⁰A faithful man is rich with blessings; but one who is eager to be rich will not go unpunished.

¹⁶To those who sold the doves, he said, “Take these things out of here! Don’t make my Father’s house a marketplace!”

²⁴For a certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith who made silver shrines of Artemis, brought no little business to the craftsmen, ²⁵whom he gathered together with the workmen of like occupation, and said, “Sirs, you know that by this business we have our wealth. ²⁶You see and hear that not at Ephesus alone, but almost throughout all Asia, this Paul has persuaded and turned away many people, saying that they are no gods that are made with hands.

²⁶Jesus answered them, “Most certainly I tell you, you seek me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled. ²⁷Don’t work for the food which perishes, but for the food which remains to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For God the Father has sealed him.”

⁴Don’t weary yourself to be rich. In your wisdom, show restraint. ⁵Why do you set your eyes on that which is not? For it certainly sprouts wings like an eagle and flies in the sky.

^6[+] But godliness with contentment is great gain. ⁷For we brought nothing into the world, and we certainly can’t carry anything out. ⁸But having food and clothing, we will be content with that. ⁹But those who are determined to be rich fall into a temptation, a snare, and many foolish and harmful lusts, such as drown men in ruin and destruction. ¹⁰For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some have been led astray from the faith in their greed, and have pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
