Ecclesiastes 3:18

²²I was so senseless and ignorant. I was a brute beast before you.

¹²But man, despite his riches, doesn’t endure. He is like the animals that perish.

¹²But these, as unreasoning creatures, born natural animals to be taken and destroyed, speaking evil in matters about which they are ignorant, will in their destroying surely be destroyed,

²⁷Inasmuch as it is appointed for men to die once, and after this, judgment,

¹⁷To Adam he said, “Because you have listened to your wife’s voice, and have eaten from the tree, about which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat of it,’ the ground is cursed for your sake. You will eat from it with much labor all the days of your life. ¹⁸It will yield thorns and thistles to you; and you will eat the herb of the field. ¹⁹You will eat bread by the sweat of your face until you return to the ground, for you were taken out of it. For you are dust, and you shall return to dust.”

²³and that he might make known the riches of his glory on vessels of mercy, which he prepared beforehand for glory—

²⁴For, “All flesh is like grass, and all of man’s glory like the flower in the grass. The grass withers, and its flower falls;

¹“Man, who is born of a woman, is of few days, and full of trouble. ²He grows up like a flower, and is cut down. He also flees like a shadow, and doesn’t continue. ³Do you open your eyes on such a one, and bring me into judgment with you? ⁴Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? Not one.

⁸Will you even annul my judgment? Will you condemn me, that you may be justified?

⁵You sweep them away as they sleep. In the morning they sprout like new grass. ⁶In the morning it sprouts and springs up. By evening, it is withered and dry. ⁷For we are consumed in your anger. We are troubled in your wrath. ⁸You have set our iniquities before you, our secret sins in the light of your presence. ⁹For all our days have passed away in your wrath. We bring our years to an end as a sigh. ¹⁰The days of our years are seventy, or even by reason of strength eighty years; yet their pride is but labor and sorrow, for it passes quickly, and we fly away. ¹¹Who knows the power of your anger, your wrath according to the fear that is due to you? ¹²So teach us to count our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.
