Deuteronomy 6:16

⁷He called the name of the place Massah,^[+] and Meribah,^[+] because the children of Israel quarreled, and because they tested the LORD, saying, “Is the LORD among us, or not?”

¹²Jesus answering, said to him, “It has been said, ‘You shall not tempt the Lord your God.’”

⁷Jesus said to him, “Again, it is written, ‘You shall not test the Lord, your God.’”

⁸Don’t harden your heart, as at Meribah, as in the day of Massah in the wilderness, ⁹when your fathers tempted me, tested me, and saw my work.

⁸don’t harden your hearts as in the rebellion, in the day of the trial in the wilderness, ⁹where your fathers tested me and tried me, and saw my deeds for forty years.

⁹Let’s not test Christ,^[+] as some of them tested, and perished by the serpents.

²Therefore the people quarreled with Moses, and said, “Give us water to drink.” Moses said to them, “Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you test the LORD?”

^4[+] They traveled from Mount Hor by the way to the Red Sea, to go around the land of Edom. The soul of the people was very discouraged because of the journey. ⁵The people spoke against God and against Moses: “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no bread, there is no water, and our soul loathes this disgusting food!”

³The people quarreled with Moses, and spoke, saying, “We wish that we had died when our brothers died before the LORD! ⁴Why have you brought the LORD’s assembly into this wilderness, that we should die there, we and our animals?

¹³These are the waters of Meribah;^[+] because the children of Israel strove with the LORD, and he was sanctified in them.
