1 Thessalonians 5:7

¹³Let’s walk properly, as in the day; not in reveling and drunkenness, not in sexual promiscuity and lustful acts, and not in strife and jealousy.

³⁴Wake up righteously and don’t sin, for some have no knowledge of God. I say this to your shame.

¹³receiving the wages of unrighteousness; people who count it pleasure to revel in the daytime, spots and defects, reveling in their deceit while they feast with you;

¹⁵For these aren’t drunken, as you suppose, seeing it is only the third hour of the day.

⁴They drank wine, and praised the gods of gold, and of silver, of bronze, of iron, of wood, and of stone.

⁵In the same hour, the fingers of a man’s hand came out and wrote near the lamp stand on the plaster of the wall of the king’s palace. The king saw the part of the hand that wrote.

⁴My heart flutters. Horror has frightened me. The twilight that I desired has been turned into trembling for me. ⁵They prepare the table. They set the watch. They eat. They drink. Rise up, you princes, oil the shield!

¹⁴Therefore he says, “Awake, you who sleep, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.”

³⁴“So be careful, or your hearts will be loaded down with carousing, drunkenness, and cares of this life, and that day will come on you suddenly. ³⁵For it will come like a snare on all those who dwell on the surface of all the earth.

²⁹Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has strife? Who has complaints? Who has needless bruises? Who has bloodshot eyes? ³⁰Those who stay long at the wine; those who go to seek out mixed wine. ³¹Don’t look at the wine when it is red, when it sparkles in the cup, when it goes down smoothly. ³²In the end, it bites like a snake, and poisons like a viper. ³³Your eyes will see strange things, and your mind will imagine confusing things. ³⁴Yes, you will be as he who lies down in the middle of the sea, or as he who lies on top of the rigging: ³⁵“They hit me, and I was not hurt! They beat me, and I don’t feel it! When will I wake up? I can do it again. I will look for more.”

³⁶Abigail came to Nabal; and behold, he held a feast in his house like the feast of a king. Nabal’s heart was merry within him, for he was very drunk. Therefore she told him nothing until the morning light. ³⁷In the morning, when the wine had gone out of Nabal, his wife told him these things; and his heart died within him, and he became as a stone.
