Romans 13:5

²I say, “Keep the king’s command!” because of the oath to God.

¹⁶In this I also practice always having a conscience void of offense toward God and men.

¹⁹For it is commendable if someone endures pain, suffering unjustly, because of conscience toward God.

¹Remind them to be in subjection to rulers and to authorities, to be obedient, to be ready for every good work, ²to speak evil of no one, not to be contentious, to be gentle, showing all humility toward all men.

⁵Afterward, David’s heart struck him because he had cut off Saul’s skirt. ⁶He said to his men, “The LORD forbid that I should do this thing to my lord, the LORD’s anointed, to stretch out my hand against him, since he is the LORD’s anointed.”

¹³Therefore subject yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord’s sake: whether to the king, as supreme, ¹⁴or to governors, as sent by him for vengeance on evildoers and for praise to those who do well. ¹⁵For this is the will of God, that by well-doing you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish men.

¹⁶having a good conscience. Thus, while you are spoken against as evildoers, they may be disappointed who curse your good way of life in Christ.

¹⁸Pray for us, for we are persuaded that we have a good conscience, desiring to live honorably in all things.
