Psalms 147:10

⁷But the LORD said to Samuel, “Don’t look on his face, or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for I don’t see as man sees. For man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.”

¹⁶There is no king saved by the multitude of an army. A mighty man is not delivered by great strength. ¹⁷A horse is a vain thing for safety, neither does he deliver any by his great power. ¹⁸Behold, the LORD’s eye is on those who fear him, on those who hope in his loving kindness,

³¹The horse is prepared for the day of battle; but victory is with the LORD.

⁷Some trust in chariots, and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the LORD our God.

¹Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help, and rely on horses, and trust in chariots because they are many, and in horsemen because they are very strong, but they don’t look to the Holy One of Israel, and they don’t seek the LORD!

¹¹I returned and saw under the sun that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favor to men of skill; but time and chance happen to them all.

⁷But I will have mercy on the house of Judah, and will save them by the LORD their God, ^[+] and will not save them by bow, sword, battle, horses, or horsemen.”

²³Saul and Jonathan were lovely and pleasant in their lives. In their death, they were not divided. They were swifter than eagles. They were stronger than lions.

¹⁹“Have you given the horse might? Have you clothed his neck with a quivering mane? ²⁰Have you made him to leap as a locust? The glory of his snorting is awesome. ²¹He paws in the valley, and rejoices in his strength. He goes out to meet the armed men. ²²He mocks at fear, and is not dismayed, neither does he turn back from the sword. ²³The quiver rattles against him, the flashing spear and the javelin. ²⁴He eats up the ground with fierceness and rage, neither does he stand still at the sound of the trumpet. ²⁵As often as the trumpet sounds he snorts, ‘Aha!’ He smells the battle afar off, the thunder of the captains, and the shouting.

¹⁸The three sons of Zeruiah were there: Joab, Abishai, and Asahel. Asahel was as light of foot as a wild gazelle. ¹⁹Asahel pursued Abner. He didn’t turn to the right hand or to the left from following Abner.

²⁰Then Abner looked behind him and said, “Is that you, Asahel?” He answered, “It is.”

²¹Abner said to him, “Turn away to your right hand or to your left, and grab one of the young men, and take his armor.” But Asahel would not turn away from following him. ²²Abner said again to Asahel, “Turn away from following me. Why should I strike you to the ground? How then could I look Joab your brother in the face?” ²³However, he refused to turn away. Therefore Abner with the back end of the spear struck him in the body, so that the spear came out behind him; and he fell down there and died in the same place. As many as came to the place where Asahel fell down and died stood still.
