Psalms 109:16

¹⁸The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

¹⁴The wicked have drawn out the sword, and have bent their bow, to cast down the poor and needy, to kill those who are upright on the path.

¹³For judgment is without mercy to him who has shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment.

³³Shouldn’t you also have had mercy on your fellow servant, even as I had mercy on you?’ ³⁴His lord was angry, and delivered him to the tormentors until he should pay all that was due to him. ³⁵So my heavenly Father will also do to you, if you don’t each forgive your brother from your hearts for his misdeeds.”

²¹They said to one another, “We are certainly guilty concerning our brother, in that we saw the distress of his soul, when he begged us, and we wouldn’t listen. Therefore this distress has come upon us.”

⁷Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.

³⁵When they had crucified him, they divided his clothing among them, casting lots,^36[+] and they sat and watched him there. ³⁷They set up over his head the accusation against him written, “THIS IS JESUS, THE KING OF THE JEWS.”

³⁸Then there were two robbers crucified with him, one on his right hand and one on the left.

³⁹Those who passed by blasphemed him, wagging their heads ⁴⁰and saying, “You who destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself! If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross!”

⁴¹Likewise the chief priests also mocking with the scribes, the Pharisees,^[+] and the elders, said, ⁴²“He saved others, but he can’t save himself. If he is the King of Israel, let him come down from the cross now, and we will believe in him. ⁴³He trusts in God. Let God deliver him now, if he wants him; for he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’” ⁴⁴The robbers also who were crucified with him cast on him the same reproach.

⁴⁵Now from the sixth hour^[+] there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour.^46[+] About the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lima^[+] sabachthani?” That is, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”

²⁰Reproach has broken my heart, and I am full of heaviness. I looked for some to take pity, but there was none; for comforters, but I found none. ²¹They also gave me poison for my food. In my thirst, they gave me vinegar to drink. ²²Let their table before them become a snare. May it become a retribution and a trap. ²³Let their eyes be darkened, so that they can’t see. Let their backs be continually bent. ²⁴Pour out your indignation on them. Let the fierceness of your anger overtake them. ²⁵Let their habitation be desolate. Let no one dwell in their tents. ²⁶For they persecute him whom you have wounded. They tell of the sorrow of those whom you have hurt. ²⁷Charge them with crime upon crime. Don’t let them come into your righteousness. ²⁸Let them be blotted out of the book of life, and not be written with the righteous. ²⁹But I am in pain and distress. Let your salvation, God, protect me.

³²The wicked watch the righteous, and seek to kill him.

²In arrogance, the wicked hunt down the weak. They are caught in the schemes that they devise.
