Proverbs 17:20

⁶And the tongue is a fire. The world of iniquity among our members is the tongue, which defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature, and is set on fire by Gehenna.^7[+] For every kind of animal, bird, creeping thing, and sea creature is tamed, and has been tamed by mankind; ⁸but nobody can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.

³¹The mouth of the righteous produces wisdom, but the perverse tongue will be cut off.

¹⁴Wise men lay up knowledge, but the mouth of the foolish is near ruin.

¹³The fear of the LORD is to hate evil. I hate pride, arrogance, the evil way, and the perverse mouth.

²⁶With the pure, you will show yourself pure. With the crooked you will show yourself shrewd.

¹²A worthless person, a man of iniquity, is he who walks with a perverse mouth, ¹³who winks with his eyes, who signals with his feet, who motions with his fingers, ¹⁴in whose heart is perverseness, who devises evil continually, who always sows discord. ¹⁵Therefore his calamity will come suddenly. He will be broken suddenly, and that without remedy.

³²For the perverse is an abomination to the LORD, but his friendship is with the upright.

⁶A fool’s lips come into strife, and his mouth invites beatings. ⁷A fool’s mouth is his destruction, and his lips are a snare to his soul.

¹²The words of a wise man’s mouth are gracious; but a fool is swallowed by his own lips.

¹⁰One who winks with the eye causes sorrow, but a chattering fool will fall.
