Jeremiah 9:23

²⁷but God chose the foolish things of the world that he might put to shame those who are wise. God chose the weak things of the world that he might put to shame the things that are strong. ²⁸God chose the lowly things of the world, and the things that are despised, and the things that don’t exist, that he might bring to nothing the things that exist, ²⁹that no flesh should boast before God.

²¹Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight!

¹¹I returned and saw under the sun that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favor to men of skill; but time and chance happen to them all.

²²Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,

¹⁸Let no one deceive himself. If anyone thinks that he is wise among you in this world, let him become a fool that he may become wise. ¹⁹For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, “He has taken the wise in their craftiness.”²⁰And again, “The Lord knows the reasoning of the wise, that it is worthless.”

⁶Those who trust in their wealth, and boast in the multitude of their riches— ⁷none of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give God a ransom for him. ⁸For the redemption of their life is costly, no payment is ever enough, ⁹that he should live on forever, that he should not see corruption. ¹⁰For he sees that wise men die; likewise the fool and the senseless perish, and leave their wealth to others. ¹¹Their inward thought is that their houses will endure forever, and their dwelling places to all generations. They name their lands after themselves. ¹²But man, despite his riches, doesn’t endure. He is like the animals that perish. ¹³This is the destiny of those who are foolish, and of those who approve their sayings. Selah.

¹⁹They will cast their silver in the streets, and their gold will be as an unclean thing. Their silver and their gold won’t be able to deliver them in the day of the LORD’s wrath. They won’t satisfy their souls or fill their bellies; because it has been the stumbling block of their iniquity.

¹⁴But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your heart, don’t boast and don’t lie against the truth. ¹⁵This wisdom is not that which comes down from above, but is earthly, sensual, and demonic. ¹⁶For where jealousy and selfish ambition are, there is confusion and every evil deed.

²⁴“If I have made gold my hope, and have said to the fine gold, ‘You are my confidence;’ ²⁵If I have rejoiced because my wealth was great, and because my hand had gotten much;

¹⁹For it is written, “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise. I will bring the discernment of the discerning to nothing.”

²⁰Where is the wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Hasn’t God made foolish the wisdom of this world? ²¹For seeing that in the wisdom of God, the world through its wisdom didn’t know God, it was God’s good pleasure through the foolishness of the preaching to save those who believe.
