James 2:23

⁶He believed in the LORD, who credited it to him for righteousness.

⁸“But you, Israel, my servant, Jacob whom I have chosen, the offspring of Abraham my friend,

⁷Didn’t you, our God, drive out the inhabitants of this land before your people Israel, and give it to the offspring^[+] of Abraham your friend forever?

⁶Even so, Abraham “believed God, and it was counted to him for righteousness.”

²²Therefore it also was “credited to him for righteousness.”²³Now it was not written that it was accounted to him for his sake alone, ²⁴but for our sake also, to whom it will be accounted, who believe in him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead,

³For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.”⁴Now to him who works, the reward is not counted as grace, but as something owed. ⁵But to him who doesn’t work, but believes in him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is accounted for righteousness. ⁶Even as David also pronounces blessing on the man to whom God counts righteousness apart from works:

¹¹The LORD spoke to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. He turned again into the camp, but his servant Joshua, the son of Nun, a young man, didn’t depart from the Tent.

¹³Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. ¹⁴You are my friends if you do whatever I command you. ¹⁵No longer do I call you servants, for the servant doesn’t know what his lord does. But I have called you friends, for everything that I heard from my Father, I have made known to you.

²God didn’t reject his people, whom he foreknew. Or don’t you know what the Scripture says about Elijah? How he pleads with God against Israel:

²²But the Scripture imprisoned all things under sin, that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.
