Isaiah 5:18

¹⁴In the prophets of Jerusalem I have also seen a horrible thing: they commit adultery and walk in lies. They strengthen the hands of evildoers, so that no one returns from his wickedness. They have all become to me as Sodom, and its inhabitants as Gomorrah.”

³¹The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests rule by their own authority; and my people love to have it so. What will you do in the end of it?

⁴No one sues in righteousness, and no one pleads in truth. They trust in vanity and speak lies. They conceive mischief and give birth to iniquity. ⁵They hatch adders’ eggs and weave the spider’s web. He who eats of their eggs dies; and that which is crushed breaks out into a viper. ⁶Their webs won’t become garments. They won’t cover themselves with their works. Their works are works of iniquity, and acts of violence are in their hands. ⁷Their feet run to evil, and they hurry to shed innocent blood. Their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity. Desolation and destruction are in their paths. ⁸They don’t know the way of peace; and there is no justice in their ways. They have made crooked paths for themselves; whoever goes in them doesn’t know peace.

²For he flatters himself in his own eyes, too much to detect and hate his sin.

²²Because with lies you have grieved the heart of the righteous, whom I have not made sad; and strengthened the hands of the wicked, that he should not return from his wicked way, and be saved alive.

¹⁰“For the land is full of adulterers; for because of the curse the land mourns. The pastures of the wilderness have dried up. Their course is evil, and their might is not right;

⁵They break your people in pieces, LORD, and afflict your heritage. ⁶They kill the widow and the alien, and murder the fatherless. ⁷They say, “The LORD^[+] will not see, neither will Jacob’s God consider.” ⁸Consider, you senseless among the people; you fools, when will you be wise? ⁹He who implanted the ear, won’t he hear? He who formed the eye, won’t he see? ¹⁰He who disciplines the nations, won’t he punish? He who teaches man knows. ¹¹The LORD knows the thoughts of man, that they are futile.

¹⁵“Because you have said, ‘We have made a covenant with death, and we are in agreement with Sheol.^[+] When the overflowing scourge passes through, it won’t come to us; for we have made lies our refuge, and we have hidden ourselves under falsehood.’”

⁵The man Micah had a house of gods, and he made an ephod, and teraphim,^[+] and consecrated one of his sons, who became his priest.

¹⁵Then the prophet Jeremiah said to Hananiah the prophet, “Listen, Hananiah! The LORD has not sent you, but you make this people trust in a lie. ¹⁶Therefore the LORD says, ‘Behold, I will send you away from off the surface of the earth. This year you will die, because you have spoken rebellion against the LORD.’”
