Isaiah 5:12

⁵Because they don’t respect the works of the LORD, nor the operation of his hands, he will break them down and not build them up.

¹¹They send out their little ones like a flock. Their children dance. ¹²They sing to the tambourine and harp, and rejoice at the sound of the pipe. ¹³They spend their days in prosperity. In an instant they go down to Sheol.^14[+] They tell God, ‘Depart from us, for we don’t want to know about your ways.

⁴who lie on beds of ivory, and stretch themselves on their couches, and eat the lambs out of the flock, and the calves out of the middle of the stall, ⁵who strum on the strings of a harp, who invent for themselves instruments of music, like David; ⁶who drink wine in bowls, and anoint themselves with the best oils, but they are not grieved for the affliction of Joseph.

²⁷because they turned away from following him, and wouldn’t pay attention to any of his ways,

¹²These are hidden rocky reefs in your love feasts when they feast with you, shepherds who without fear feed themselves; clouds without water, carried along by winds; autumn trees without fruit, twice dead, plucked up by the roots;

²³but have lifted up yourself against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of his house before you, and you and your lords, your wives, and your concubines, have drunk wine from them. You have praised the gods of silver and gold, of bronze, iron, wood, and stone, which don’t see, or hear, or know; and you have not glorified the God in whose hand your breath is, and whose are all your ways.

⁵How great are your works, LORD! Your thoughts are very deep. ⁶A senseless man doesn’t know, neither does a fool understand this:

¹⁹“Now there was a certain rich man, and he was clothed in purple and fine linen, living in luxury every day.

¹⁹who say, “Let him make haste, let him hasten his work, that we may see it; let the counsel of the Holy One of Israel draw near and come, that we may know it!”

¹⁰They will eat, and not have enough. They will play the prostitute, and will not increase; because they have abandoned listening to the LORD. ¹¹Prostitution, wine, and new wine take away understanding.
