Isaiah 38:16

³²But when we are judged, we are disciplined by the Lord, that we may not be condemned with the world.

⁴But he answered, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of God’s mouth.’”

¹⁰For they indeed for a few days disciplined us as seemed good to them, but he for our profit, that we may be partakers of his holiness. ¹¹All chastening seems for the present to be not joyous but grievous; yet afterward it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.

²⁵My soul is laid low in the dust. Revive me according to your word!

¹⁹“He is chastened also with pain on his bed, with continual strife in his bones, ²⁰so that his life abhors bread, and his soul dainty food. ²¹His flesh is so consumed away that it can’t be seen. His bones that were not seen stick out. ²²Yes, his soul draws near to the pit, and his life to the destroyers. ²³“If there is beside him an angel, an interpreter, one among a thousand, to show to man what is right for him, ²⁴then God is gracious to him, and says, ‘Deliver him from going down to the pit, I have found a ransom.’ ²⁵His flesh will be fresher than a child’s. He returns to the days of his youth. ²⁶He prays to God, and he is favorable to him, so that he sees his face with joy. He restores to man his righteousness. ²⁷He sings before men, and says, ‘I have sinned, and perverted that which was right, and it didn’t profit me. ²⁸He has redeemed my soul from going into the pit. My life will see the light.’

³He humbled you, allowed you to be hungry, and fed you with manna, which you didn’t know, neither did your fathers know, that he might teach you that man does not live by bread only, but man lives by every word that proceeds out of the LORD’s mouth.

⁵You meet him who rejoices and does righteousness, those who remember you in your ways. Behold, you were angry, and we sinned. We have been in sin for a long time. Shall we be saved?

¹⁷For our light affliction, which is for the moment, works for us more and more exceedingly an eternal weight of glory,

²⁰You, who have shown us many and bitter troubles, you will let me live. You will bring us up again from the depths of the earth.
