Genesis 37:34

²⁹Reuben returned to the pit, and saw that Joseph wasn’t in the pit; and he tore his clothes.

³¹David said to Joab and to all the people who were with him, “Tear your clothes, and clothe yourselves with sackcloth, and mourn in front of Abner.” King David followed the bier.

¹²In that day, the Lord, GOD ^[+] of Armies, called to weeping, to mourning, to baldness, and to dressing in sackcloth; ¹³and behold, there is joy and gladness, killing cattle and killing sheep, eating meat and drinking wine: “Let’s eat and drink, for tomorrow we will die.”

¹When King Hezekiah heard it, he tore his clothes, covered himself with sackcloth, and went into the LORD’s house.

²⁰Then Job arose, and tore his robe, and shaved his head, and fell down on the ground, and worshiped.

³I will give power to my two witnesses, and they will prophesy one thousand two hundred sixty days, clothed in sackcloth.”

⁵The people of Nineveh believed God; and they proclaimed a fast and put on sackcloth, from their greatest even to their least. ⁶The news reached the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, took off his royal robe, covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in ashes. ⁷He made a proclamation and published through Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, “Let neither man nor animal, herd nor flock, taste anything; let them not feed, nor drink water; ⁸but let them be covered with sackcloth, both man and animal, and let them cry mightily to God. Yes, let them turn everyone from his evil way and from the violence that is in his hands.

¹Now in the twenty-fourth day of this month the children of Israel were assembled with fasting, with sackcloth, and dirt on them.

¹¹Then David took hold on his clothes and tore them; and all the men who were with him did likewise.

²⁴The king and his servants who heard all these words were not afraid, and didn’t tear their garments.
