Exodus 21:6

¹⁷then you shall take an awl, and thrust it through his ear to the door, and he shall be your servant forever. Also to your female servant you shall do likewise.

⁴⁰As a hired servant, and as a temporary resident, he shall be with you; he shall serve with you until the Year of Jubilee.

²David said to Achish, “Therefore you will know what your servant can do.” Achish said to David, “Therefore I will make you my bodyguard forever.”

¹⁷then both the men, between whom the controversy is, shall stand before the LORD, before the priests and the judges who shall be in those days; ¹⁸and the judges shall make diligent inquisition; and behold, if the witness is a false witness, and has testified falsely against his brother,

⁷They replied, “If you will be a servant to this people today, and will serve them, and answer them with good words, then they will be your servants forever.”

²³“‘The land shall not be sold in perpetuity, for the land is mine; for you are strangers and live as foreigners with me.

²¹Moreover you shall provide out of all the people able men which fear God: men of truth, hating unjust gain; and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens. ²²Let them judge the people at all times. It shall be that every great matter they shall bring to you, but every small matter they shall judge themselves. So shall it be easier for you, and they shall share the load with you. ²³If you will do this thing, and God commands you so, then you will be able to endure, and all these people also will go to their place in peace.”

²⁴So Moses listened to the voice of his father-in-law, and did all that he had said. ²⁵Moses chose able men out of all Israel, and made them heads over the people, rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens. ²⁶They judged the people at all times. They brought the hard cases to Moses, but every small matter they judged themselves.

¹²Achish believed David, saying, “He has made his people Israel utterly to abhor him. Therefore he will be my servant forever.”

³Her princes within her are roaring lions. Her judges are evening wolves. They leave nothing until the next day.

¹²For I will go through the land of Egypt in that night, and will strike all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and animal. I will execute judgments against all the gods of Egypt. I am the LORD.
