Deuteronomy 9:4

¹⁷and lest you say in your heart, “My power and the might of my hand has gotten me this wealth.”

⁵Not for your righteousness or for the uprightness of your heart do you go in to possess their land; but for the wickedness of these nations the LORD your God does drive them out from before you, and that he may establish the word which the LORD swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.

⁹When you have come into the land which the LORD your God gives you, you shall not learn to imitate the abominations of those nations. ¹⁰There shall not be found with you anyone who makes his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, one who uses divination, one who tells fortunes, or an enchanter, or a sorcerer, ¹¹or a charmer, or someone who consults with a familiar spirit, or a wizard, or a necromancer. ¹²For whoever does these things is an abomination to the LORD. Because of these abominations, the LORD your God drives them out from before you. ¹³You shall be blameless with the LORD your God. ¹⁴For these nations that you shall dispossess listen to those who practice sorcery and to diviners; but as for you, the LORD your God has not allowed you so to do.

⁹who saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given to us in Christ Jesus before times eternal,

⁷For who makes you different? And what do you have that you didn’t receive? But if you did receive it, why do you boast as if you had not received it?

²⁴“‘Don’t defile yourselves in any of these things; for in all these the nations which I am casting out before you were defiled. ²⁵The land was defiled. Therefore I punished its iniquity, and the land vomited out her inhabitants. ²⁶You therefore shall keep my statutes and my ordinances, and shall not do any of these abominations; neither the native-born, nor the stranger who lives as a foreigner among you ²⁷(for the men of the land that were before you had done all these abominations, and the land became defiled), ²⁸that the land not vomit you out also, when you defile it, as it vomited out the nation that was before you.

²⁹“‘For whoever shall do any of these abominations, even the souls that do them shall be cut off from among their people. ³⁰Therefore you shall keep my requirements, that you do not practice any of these abominable customs which were practiced before you, and that you do not defile yourselves with them. I am the LORD your God.’”

⁶And if by grace, then it is no longer of works; otherwise grace is no longer grace. But if it is of works, it is no longer grace; otherwise work is no longer work.

³For we were also once foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving various lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another. ⁴But when the kindness of God our Savior and his love toward mankind appeared, ⁵not by works of righteousness which we did ourselves, but according to his mercy, he saved us through the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit,

⁷The LORD didn’t set his love on you nor choose you, because you were more in number than any people; for you were the fewest of all peoples; ⁸but because the LORD loves you, and because he desires to keep the oath which he swore to your fathers, the LORD has brought you out with a mighty hand and redeemed you out of the house of bondage, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.

³¹You shall not do so to the LORD your God; for every abomination to the LORD, which he hates, they have done to their gods; for they even burn their sons and their daughters in the fire to their gods.
