Deuteronomy 24:14

⁵I will come near to you to judgment. I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, against the adulterers, against the perjurers, and against those who oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and who deprive the foreigner of justice, and don’t fear me,” says the LORD of Armies.

³¹He who oppresses the poor shows contempt for his Maker, but he who is kind to the needy honors him.

¹⁶Whoever oppresses the poor for his own increase and whoever gives to the rich, both come to poverty.

¹Listen to this word, you cows of Bashan, who are on the mountain of Samaria, who oppress the poor, who crush the needy, who tell their husbands, “Bring us drinks!”

¹⁰so that they go around naked without clothing. Being hungry, they carry the sheaves. ¹¹They make oil within the walls of these men. They tread wine presses, and suffer thirst.

¹²If your brother, a Hebrew man, or a Hebrew woman, is sold to you and serves you six years, then in the seventh year you shall let him go free from you. ¹³When you let him go free from you, you shall not let him go empty. ¹⁴You shall furnish him liberally out of your flock, out of your threshing floor, and out of your wine press. As the LORD your God has blessed you, you shall give to him. ¹⁵You shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the LORD your God redeemed you. Therefore I command you this thing today. ¹⁶It shall be, if he tells you, “I will not go out from you,” because he loves you and your house, because he is well with you, ¹⁷then you shall take an awl, and thrust it through his ear to the door, and he shall be your servant forever. Also to your female servant you shall do likewise. ¹⁸It shall not seem hard to you when you let him go free from you, for he has been double the value of a hired hand as he served you six years. The LORD your God will bless you in all that you do.

¹³“If I have despised the cause of my male servant or of my female servant, when they contended with me, ¹⁴what then will I do when God rises up? When he visits, what will I answer him? ¹⁵Didn’t he who made me in the womb make him? Didn’t one fashion us in the womb?

⁷They trample the heads of the poor into the dust of the earth and deny justice to the oppressed. A man and his father use the same maiden, to profane my holy name.

³⁵“‘If your brother has become poor, and his hand can’t support himself among you, then you shall uphold him. He shall live with you like an alien and a temporary resident. ³⁶Take no interest from him or profit; but fear your God, that your brother may live among you. ³⁷You shall not lend him your money at interest, nor give him your food for profit. ³⁸I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, to give you the land of Canaan, and to be your God.

³⁹“‘If your brother has grown poor among you, and sells himself to you, you shall not make him to serve as a slave. ⁴⁰As a hired servant, and as a temporary resident, he shall be with you; he shall serve with you until the Year of Jubilee. ⁴¹Then he shall go out from you, he and his children with him, and shall return to his own family, and to the possession of his fathers. ⁴²For they are my servants, whom I brought out of the land of Egypt. They shall not be sold as slaves. ⁴³You shall not rule over him with harshness, but shall fear your God.

⁷Remain in that same house, eating and drinking the things they give, for the laborer is worthy of his wages. Don’t go from house to house.
