Acts 5:9

⁹Let’s not test Christ,^[+] as some of them tested, and perished by the serpents.

³But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and to keep back part of the price of the land? ⁴While you kept it, didn’t it remain your own? After it was sold, wasn’t it in your power? How is it that you have conceived this thing in your heart? You haven’t lied to men, but to God.”

⁸Don’t harden your heart, as at Meribah, as in the day of Massah in the wilderness, ⁹when your fathers tempted me, tested me, and saw my work. ¹⁰Forty long years I was grieved with that generation, and said, “They are a people who err in their heart. They have not known my ways.” ¹¹Therefore I swore in my wrath, “They won’t enter into my rest.”

⁵⁶Yet they tempted and rebelled against the Most High God, and didn’t keep his testimonies,

¹⁰Now therefore why do you tempt God, that you should put a yoke on the neck of the disciples which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear?

⁴⁰How often they rebelled against him in the wilderness, and grieved him in the desert! ⁴¹They turned again and tempted God, and provoked the Holy One of Israel.

¹⁸They tempted God in their heart by asking food according to their desire. ¹⁹Yes, they spoke against God. They said, “Can God prepare a table in the wilderness? ²⁰Behold, he struck the rock, so that waters gushed out, and streams overflowed. Can he give bread also? Will he provide meat for his people?”

²He called him, and said to him, ‘What is this that I hear about you? Give an accounting of your management, for you can no longer be manager.’

⁷He called the name of the place Massah,^[+] and Meribah,^[+] because the children of Israel quarreled, and because they tested the LORD, saying, “Is the LORD among us, or not?”

¹⁹Now we know that whatever things the law says, it speaks to those who are under the law, that every mouth may be closed, and all the world may be brought under the judgment of God.
